Global affairs encompasses the study of international relations—the scientific analysis of international connections between states. It is a rapidly growing field and offers many career options for people with the vision, knowledge and skills to make a difference in a complex world.
In the private sector, jobs could be found with companies such as health care, financial services, telecommunications and aerospace technology; or in consulting and contracting. Nonprofit opportunities exist with foundations, trade associations, public interest groups, think tanks and research organizations. And in the government sector, positions could be with local, state and federal agencies, foreign governments or multilateral organizations composed of several countries (e.g. the United Nations).
Students in this program are also able to choose a regional and/or thematic concentration to tailor their degree to their interests, passions and career goals. This includes a focus on the study of globalization processes that impact all societies, as well as an emphasis on cross-cultural understanding and engagement. The program also encourages involvement in international experiences such as study abroad and internships.
In the final year of the major, students complete a global affairs capstone project in which they apply their academic training to a real-world problem or issue. The course is designed to give students experience working on a team, which will be invaluable in the workplace. Students may also opt to write a senior essay, either in a seminar of their choice or in the global affairs senior essay course GLBL 4500.
