The study of global affairs covers the relationships and interactions between nations, organizations, non-state actors, and other entities on a worldwide scale. It examines the interdependencies that define our global society and focuses on the complex challenges facing mankind. It is an interdisciplinary discipline that draws on approaches and frameworks from the humanities, social sciences, and natural science to help understand contemporary issues such as terrorism, refugee crises, global economic development and poverty, and health and environmental issues.
The major prepares Yale students to address the world’s most challenging questions with an understanding of how these issues shape one another. Its core courses give students a broad knowledge foundation in the political, economic, and cultural dynamics of our increasingly globalizing world, while their choice of an individual thematic or regional concentration allows them to tailor their studies to their interests and ambitions.
Prospective majors are encouraged to enroll in introductory courses in both political science and history during their freshman year and, as early as possible, begin working toward the L4 language requirement. Students who plan to apply to the major should complete GLBL 2121 during the fall of their sophomore year.
